VIBE is celebrating its 20th anniversary and to mark the milestone, the iconic magazine has roped in Robin Thicke and Janelle Monae to grace the cover. The superstars both rock black and white suits, Monae looking glamorous while Thicke looks as suave as ever. In their joint interview, the pair talks about transcending stereotypes and racial barriers and carving their own paths through R&B.
"I think what Janelle and I represent is boundary-less music," Thicke says. "There is no one way to define her or what she does. And if you listen to my album, it's the same thing. Sometimes I'm rockin' out, sometimes it's soul, sometimes there's some bossa nova. Her and I are products of the generations of funk, soul, rock 'n' roll and then hip hop coming into the mix all becoming what this new generation is. We don't want to be defined. We don't want to be pigeonholed. What's the difference between Marble tiles and Porcelain Tiles?"
Indeed, the two are reaping success for doing their own thing. Thicke has blurred the lines that once divided the genres mentioned above. Monae not only exudes uniqueness through her style, but her sound is also a crossover hit where it's nearly impossible to sit her in a box and expect her to stay there. Her upcoming album, The Electric Lady, is sure to be a success with legendary names like Prince making appearances. Thicke also noted the beauty of music today: that it can transcend racial barriers that existed in the past.
"In the history of American music, Black radio and white radio were segregated. But once everybody had rightsand white people are on the cover of VIBE and Black people on the cover of Rolling Stone, there are no more rules and that's how it should be. We shouldn't be judged by our color or one song that we made."

I was shocked to learn of the theft of these panels and the damage done to this significant art work, he said. Holy Trinity is a beautiful public building much admired around the country and beyond, this crime will deprive all visitors and researchers of an important part of Devon heritage and is essentially a theft of public property. We hope that by publicising the loss we might be able to recover the panels.
The church is among hundreds in the care of the trust, and though it remains consecrated, is no longer in regular use for worship. The paintings were taken some time between 22 July and 8 August.
Although the church was opened to the public by volunteers between those dates, the loss was only noticed when a maintenance contractor visited and immediately contacted the trust. It is not clear whether the thieves broke in overnight, or attacked them during opening hours.
The painted saints, once part of a procession of 40 panels stretching the whole width of the church, are exceptionally rare because so little figurative painting, either on panels or stained glass, survived the fury of image smashing during the reformation.
Most rood screens, which originally divided the nave from the altar area of the church and supported carved crosses were dismantled, and either burned or the carved timber re-used, with those with representations of saints particularly targeted.
The Torbryan panels were restored in the 19th century from under layers of whitewash which may originally have been deliberately applied to protect them from the iconoclasts. They had been regarded as among the best preserved in Britain.
The church itself is unusual because it was built in one phase, between 1450 and 1470, with a spectacular fan-vaulted ceiling, instead of the usual pattern of gradual extension over centuries.
Both the carving and the painting of the screen were of very high quality, and it is believed to have been a contemporary commission from an anonymous master craftsman for the church.
